What is calcium leucovorin injection?

• It is used as an adjuvant cancer care treatment to -
• Reduce the toxicity and
• Side effects of chemotherapy.
• Enhance chemotherapy efficacy

Uses of leucovorin

• Colorectal cancer (adjuvant to 5-fluorouracil)
• Rescue therapy after methotrexate, trimethoprim and methotrexate therapy
• Adjuvant to anti-folate agents in blood cancer, lymphomas, solid tumors, etc.

How does it work?

• Recovering folate levels in anti-folate cancer therapies
• Enhanced the chemotherapy effects

Common side effects

• Nausea
• Tiredness
• Skin rashes/mouth sores
• GIT upset

Serious side effects

• Neurological conditions- seizures
• Anaphylactic reaction - swelling of lips,face ,tongue etc
• Severe gastrointestinal side effects

Contraindications

Not to be used if any previous allergy or hypersensitivity to leucoverin or any excipients.

Low RBC count.

• Breastfeeding mothers
• Pregnant women

To be used under the supervision of a medical practitioner or oncology specialist, having adequate diagnostic and monitoring facilities.

Not to be used as a folate supplement.
