What is calcium leucovorin injection?
It is used as an adjuvant cancer care treatment to –
- Reduce the toxicity
- Side effects of chemotherapy
- Enhance chemotherapy efficacy
Uses of leucovorin
- Colorectal cancer (adjuvant to 5-fluorouracil)
- Rescue therapy after methotrexate, trimethoprim and methotrexate therapy
- Adjuvant to anti-folate agents in blood cancer, lymphomas, solid tumors, etc.

- Recovering folate levels in anti-folate cancer therapies
- Enhanced the chemotherapy effects
Common side effects
- Nausea
- Tiredness
- Skin rashes/mouth sores
- GIT upset
Serious side effects
- Neurological conditions – seizures
- Anaphylactic reaction – swelling of lips, face, tongue etc.
- Severe gastrointestinal side effects
Contraindications
- Not to be used if any previous allergy or hypersensitivity to leucovorin or any excipients
- Low RBC count
- Breastfeeding mothers
- Pregnant women
Warnings
To be used under the supervision of a medical practitioner or oncology specialist, having adequate diagnostic and monitoring facilities.
Not to be used as a folate supplement.
