What is Dasakast?
Dasakast is an anticancer drug and is used in targeted therapy for both chronic and acute leukemia.
It is used for Philadelphia chromosome-positive leukemia when no other drug works.
Uses of Dasakast
• Myeloid Leukemia (Chronic)
• Lymphocytic leukemia (Acute)
How does Dasakast work?
It inhibits the cancer cell enzyme (tyrosine kinase)
Stops cancer cell growth and multiplication
Shrink cancer
Common Side Effects
• Infections- cough, changing temperatures, headache, chills, and fever.
• Bleeding of gums and nose—fall in blood count
• Hemorrhage
• Diarrhea
• Skin rashes, dryness, and itching
• Oedema
• Fatigue
• Stomach bloating and pain
Severe Side Effects
• Scarring of the lungs
• Bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract
• A severe skin reaction
• QT Prolongation—irregular heartbeats
Contraindications
• Not to be used in patients
• Hypersensitivity or allergic reaction to the drug or its excipients.
• Breastfeeding mothers—it may be passed on to infants or breastfeeding children
• Pregnant women—it may be teratogenic.
Toxicities
• Bone marrow suppression—low blood count
• Pleural effusion—shortness of breath, fluid buildup around the lungs
• Hematological toxicity—bleeding risk, decreased platelet count
• Hepatotoxicity—elevated enzymes
• Cardiovascular Toxicity—irregular heartbeat
Precautions
To be used cautiously in patients with
• Hepatic impaired functions
• Renal impaired functions
• Blood disorders
• Cardiovascular disorders
